Finland Rejects Territorial Concessions to Russia

(MENAFN) Finland on Tuesday dismissed the idea of making any land concessions to Russia as part of a peace agreement in Ukraine, stressing that such steps would not secure stability but instead encourage further Russian “aggression” across the area.

Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, addressing an annual gathering of ambassadors in Berlin, emphasized that the most recent Russian aerial assaults on Ukraine—the fiercest since the conflict began—prove that Moscow is not prepared for a ceasefire, let alone meaningful dialogue.

"If, in negotiations, parts of Ukrainian territory or elements of its sovereignty were to be sacrificed, we would not solve the fundamental problem, but rather potentially deepen Russia's aggression," the minister warned.

She added, "Russian President Putin is conducting hybrid warfare throughout Europe—influencing elections, disrupting GPS systems for air traffic, and deploying a shadow fleet in the Baltic Sea region. The problem with Putin cannot be solved at the expense of Ukraine."

Valtonen underlined that Western allies must continue firm backing of Kyiv, strategically curb Russia's ambitions, and restrict Moscow’s leverage by enforcing stricter trade and financial penalties, along with imposing tariffs on all Russian exports entering the EU’s single market.
